Nongpoh, July 23: Residents of Ri Bhoi District, particularly those in remote rural areas, continue to grapple with frequent and prolonged power outages that have disrupted daily life and hampered students’ ability to study.
Raising strong concern over the matter, members of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), North Khasi Hills District, led by General Secretary Ricky Majaw, met with Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal on Wednesday to submit a memorandum seeking urgent intervention.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Majaw said the power situation in the district has become unbearable, especially in rural areas where electricity supply is highly erratic. “Whether it rains or shines, power goes off. People are unable to depend on electricity for even basic needs,” he said, adding that the situation is affecting not just households, but also the education and productivity of students and youth.
In addition to power issues, the FKJGP also raised concerns over the lack of adequate facilities at the District Library in Nongpoh. While a building exists, Majaw pointed out that the infrastructure and resources fall short when compared to libraries in other districts.
He urged the district administration to prioritise the improvement of the library, stating that it is a vital resource for students and young people in Ri Bhoi.
The FKJGP has called on the government to take swift and concrete action on both issues to ensure the well-being and development of the district’s residents.
