The South Calcutta Law College, which was marred by the controversy following the gangrape of a first-year student on campus, was shut indefinitely on Monday, officials said.

The classes for all students have been suspended for an indefinite period, they added.

“All BA LLB and LLM (General and Honours) classes of South Calcutta Law College will be suspended and the college premises will remain closed for all students until further notice as decided by the Governing Body,” a notification by the college read, news agency PTI reported.

The college administration’s move comes as anger against the rape incident continues to grow. The case has also gained political traction, with the ruling and the Opposition sides reacting to the case.

On June 25, a 24-year-old law student was gang-raped inside the guard’s room on her college campus. The main accused, Monojit Mishra, reportedly had two senior students stand outside to guard the room during the crime. Police have arrested Mishra, the two students, and the security guard in connection with the incident.

The Special Investigating Team (SIT), which is conducting the investigation in the case, has sealed the union room, the guard’s room, one washroom, and also the gates of the college as part of the probe. “These rooms were the place where she was tortured by the three accused,” the police said.

The officials said that the medical examination of the victim and the CCTV footage from the spot have supported her complaint.

They said that during her medical test, the doctors found signs of “forceful penetration” besides bite marks and nail scratches on her body.

Meanwhile, a crucial seven-hour-long CCTV recording showed the survivor being dragged into South Calcutta Law College from the gate by two of the accused.

“The footage supports the girl’s allegations. It clearly shows the movements of all three accused, the security guard, and the victim. We are still reviewing the video,” an investigating officer told PTI.

The police suspect that the gangrape might have been triggered by her rejection of a proposal of marriage from the main accused – Monojit Mishra.

Earlier on Monday, the BJP fact-finding team reached the college, however, the leaders were denied entry by the Kolkata Police.
