Foxconn To Manufacture iPhone Enclosures In India? Company’s New Facility To Come Up In Tamil Nadu

Last Updated:

Foxconn is building a new plant in Tamil Nadu’s ESR Industrial Park to produce iPhone enclosures, marking its entry into this segment in India. Construction has started.

The construction of Foxconn’s new unit at the ESR Industrial Park in Tamil Nadu has already begun.

Taiwan-based contract manufacturer Foxconn is planning to set up a new manufacturing plant in the ESR Industrial Park at Oragadam in Tamil Nadu, to manufacture iPhones enclosures, The Economic Times has reported citing people aware of the developments. It added that the construction of the unit has already begun.

“Foxconn plans to start making enclosures in Tamil Nadu as they deepen their footprint in the country. Construction has begun for their enclosures unit at the industrial park. This will be a separate unit close to their upcoming display module assembly plant which is in advanced stages in the same industrial park,” ET has cited one of the persons attributed above as saying.

This will be Foxconn’s entry into iPhones enclosures manufacturing in India. Currently, only Tata Electronics has been making these enclosures locally.

Apple sources enclosures from multiple players and Foxconn is one of them. Hence, it was natural for Foxconn to diversify the production in India, said Neil Shah, vice-president of Counterpoint Research.

Currently, Foxconn has been assembling iPhones in India from its Sriperumbudur facility. It is also setting up another plant in Devanahalli, near Bengaluru.

Apart from iPhone assembly, Foxconn also assembles AirPods in India from its new unit in Hyderabad.

Nearly 20% of Apple’s global iPhone output comes from India. The company ramped up its production in India after severe COVID-19 lockdowns in China that disrupted operations at Apple’s largest plant, compelling the tech giant to reduce its overdependence on the country.

India’s role in Apple’s supply chain has grown beyond assembly. The company exported Rs 1.5 lakh crore worth of iPhones, or around $17.4 billion, in the fiscal year ending March 2025.

The Indian government has rolled out $2.7 billion in incentives under its production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to boost electronics manufacturing. India’s ambition to become a global hub for electronics is further supported by its zero-tariff policy on smartphone, laptop, and tablet exports to the US.

Apple is expanding its footprint in the Indian consumer market, where it now commands nearly 8 per cent of the smartphone market share, with sales approaching $8 billion in FY24.
