Shillong, May 14: Khliehriat MLA and Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla has called for a public hearing to decide on the introduction of railways in Jaintia Hills, stating that the issue should not be determined by the government or politicians alone but by the will of the people.
“We have seen that whenever a company sets up in any region, a public hearing is held. So why not for this?” Shylla said, referring to the railway project. “This is for the public—have a public hearing and let people decide. There are different voices and opinions, but in the end, the majority should decide.”
Shylla acknowledged that people understand the difference between goods trains and passenger trains but admitted the reasons behind public opposition or support are still not fully clear. “I believe one day we will have a platform. Since the government has taken the initiative, let the public decide. Not me, not anyone else,” he said. “If the public says no, that day itself we should put a full stop. If the public says yes, then why should only the government support it? Why not NGOs, why not the public, why not different communities? We should understand the sentiment of the people.”
When asked about the party’s stance, Shylla clarified that the decision will be made collectively within the United Democratic Party (UDP). “Actually, when it comes to this, we will take a call from the party. Whatever the party decides, we will go ahead with that. I cannot say on my own as of now because it involves all political parties. So, we will leave it to our President to take a call on this.”
Pressed on his personal opinion as the MLA from Khliehriat, Shylla said, “We will leave it to the public. The public will decide. I have a feeling if the public really wants it, it should happen. If the people are against it, why should we do anything? We are here for the public. We are their servants, and it is our duty to provide for their needs and necessities. We should not go against their will or their request.”
On who stands to gain the most if railways are introduced, Shylla said, “Everyone will benefit. Those who use it will know what the outcome will be. Of course, anything you use, there will be benefit. A train is the same—it will be a benefit for those who utilize it. For those who don’t, it’s of no use.”

On allegations that some NGOs with vested interests, such as those allegedly collecting money along highways, may oppose the project, Shylla was cautious. “People may talk. Whether they collect or don’t collect, we don’t know. If people complain, then only will we know. But now, we are not talking about them. We are talking about what will be the outcome and benefits for the people. Whether someone collects or doesn’t collect is none of our business. What matters is ensuring no illegal activities happen.”
On whether the UDP is united in its views on the railway issue, Shylla said, “I remember last time Bah Jemino mentioned about goods trains. So I believe the party will stand on the same comments. As of now, I have no personal say. The party will decide what’s best, but I will let the people of Jaintia Hills decide on this.”
