A new poll reported by The Washington Post shows that most Americans think President Donald Trump is serious about trying to serve a third term, even though the US Constitution does not allow it.
The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll, which surveyed 2,464 adults, found that 62 percent of Americans believe Trump truly wants to stay in office beyond the two terms allowed under the 22nd Amendment.
The Constitution clearly says, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Yet Trump has repeatedly brought up the idea of a third run, including during a January 2025 press conference, when his supporters chanted, “Four more years.”

Trump has not ruled it out. In a recent interview with The Atlantic, he said running again in 2028 would be “challenging,” but didn’t say it was impossible.
The Washington Post notes that Trump’s campaign has even started selling “Trump 2028” merchandise, including hats and T-shirts with slogans like “Rewrite the Rules.”
“It is very hard to change the Constitution,” Dr Stephen J. Farnsworth, a political science professor, told The Independent. “It requires two-thirds of both houses of Congress and two-thirds of the states to agree.”
According to the poll, just 18 percent of Americans support Trump serving a third term. Even among Republicans, only 38 per cent are in favour, while 60 per cent are against it.

The results show that although many Americans think Trump is serious, they do not support the idea. As The Washington Post explains, most Trump supporters tend to believe he’s serious about ideas they like, and not serious about ones they oppose — creating a mixed picture of how his base views his controversial proposals.
