Share Market To Remain Closed Today: The Indian stock market for Mahashivratri will be closed tomorrow, February 26, 2025. Due to the holiday, trading in equity, equity derivatives, SLB (Stock Lending and Borrowing), currency derivatives, commodities, and commodity derivatives will be suspended. No settlements will occur on the exchanges.
Mahashivratri, the significant Hindu festival honoring Lord Shiva, will be celebrated on February 26, 2025. This day is observed by Hindus across India with rituals such as offerings of milk and datura. As the festival approaches, traders and investors are eager to know if the Indian stock market will remain closed in observance.
Banks Will Be Closed Too
In addition to the stock markets, banks across 18 states, including Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, will remain closed.
While physical bank branches will be shut, online banking services will continue to function, allowing customers to conduct transactions, pay bills, and access other banking services.
Educational institutions, both government and private, including schools and colleges, will also remain closed on this day.
Significance of Mahashivratri
Mahashivratri is a deeply spiritual occasion, with devotees offering milk and flowers to the Shivling. The festival coincides with the darkest night of the year, believed to bring about a surge of energy within the human system, triggered by planetary alignments. Many devotees observe fasting and remain awake through the night for prayer and meditation.
Stock Market Holidays in 2025
The Mahashivratri holiday is part of a schedule of 14 market closures in 2025. After Mahashivratri, the next closures are for Holi on Friday, March 14, and Id-Ul-Fitr on Monday, March 31. The month of April will feature three additional holidays: Shri Mahavir Jayanti on April 10, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, and Good Friday on April 18.
Maharashtra Day on May 1 will mark the last holiday for the first half of the year. The markets will also close on August 15 for Independence Day and August 27 for Ganesh Chaturthi.
In the final quarter of 2025, there will be market closures for Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra on October 2, Diwali-related holidays on October 21-22, and Prakash Gurpurb on November 5. Trading will conclude for the year with a Christmas holiday on December 25.
The Indian stock market operates from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with a pre-open session beginning at 9:00 AM. The market remains closed on weekends and public holidays, as outlined in the official holiday schedule.
