Nowadays, everything is being adulterated for profit. Whether spices or dry fruits like cashew nuts and almonds, they are often sold mixed with colours or other cheap and harmful substances. The demand for dry fruits in the market increases significantly during festivals like Holi and Diwali. Therefore, it is crucial to know how to differentiate between real and fake dry fruits when making a purchase.
Here are a few tips to identify fake dry fruits:
Almonds
Nowadays, almonds are often coloured. To enhance their appearance, they are made dark and shiny by adding ochre. So, while buying almonds, rub them on your hand to check. The colour should not transfer. Almonds should neither be too thick nor too small. Opt for medium-sized almonds.
Cashews
Fake cashews are also prevalent in the market. You can identify real cashews by their colour and smell. White and dull-coloured cashews are genuine. If the cashews smell of oil or appear yellow, they may be adulterated or very old.
Walnuts
Fake walnuts often have a very dark colour. Sometimes, they emit a foul smell, indicating spoilage. Therefore, always buy walnuts in their shells, as these are less likely to be adulterated. The kernels of real walnuts are light brown.
Raisins
Fake raisins are also commonly sold, with sugar added to sweeten them. Avoid buying moist raisins, as these could be fake. If any colour transfers when rubbed on your hand, avoid purchasing them.
Real and fake dry fruits can also be distinguished by their colour and taste. There is a noticeable difference in their aroma. Fake dry fruits tend to have a slightly darker colour. Moreover, fake dry fruits may taste excessively bitter or sweet.
