Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with US Vice President JD Vance in French capital Paris and attended the birthday celebration of his son, Vivek Vance, later. The two had briefly met during the dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday.

Videos shared by DD News and ANI showed the leaders engaged in a meeting with officials from both sides accompanying them. US Second Lady Usha Chilukuri was also present.

Vance said his children liked the gifts PM Modi brought from them.

Both leaders had earlier attended the AI Action Summit and had addressed the gathering. The meeting between Modi and Vance comes a day before the Indian Prime Minister’s US visit. PM Modi will be in the White House to meet US President Donald Trump and will be among the first few leaders to meet the US President following his return to the Oval Office.

At the summit, PM Modi made a strong case for collective global efforts to establish governance and standards for artificial intelligence (AI) to uphold shared values and address risks. Co-Chairing the AI Action Summit along with French President Emmanuel Macron, Modi said that AI is changing the polity, economy, security and society.

“There is a need for collective global efforts to establish governance and standards that uphold our shared values, address risks and build trust,” Modi said.

US Vice President JD Vance told Europeans on Tuesday their “massive” regulations on artificial intelligence could strangle the technology, and rejected content moderation as “authoritarian censorship”. In his speech, Vance also appeared to take aim at China at a delicate moment for the US technology sector.

“We believe that excessive regulation of the AI sector could kill a transformative industry,” Vance told the summit of CEOs and heads of state in Paris.

“We feel very strongly that AI must remain free from ideological bias and that American AI will not be co-opted into a tool for authoritarian censorship.”

“From CCTV to 5G equipment, we’re all familiar with cheap tech in the marketplace that’s been heavily subsidised and exported by authoritarian regimes,” Vance said.
